I thought I’d share this lovely little pattern that I wrote recently for one of my crochet groups. With valentines only a couple of weeks away, decorative hearts are on my mind. I love the use of different colours in this pattern but would also like to try it in single colours.

I am hoping to find time to make enough to hang on a ‘valentine tree’, but in the meantime have made a string of 3 hearts for my dresser. They are joined with yarn strung with vintage beads and I think they look really pretty.

I’d love to see some pics if you do try the pattern!

You will need:

DK cotton yarn

3mm hook

Special stitches:

Puff stitch– yoh insert hook through ch space, yoh, pull through, do this twice more so that there are 7 loops on your hook, yoh pull through all 7 loops.

Double treble (dtr)- yoh twice before you insert through stitch, yoh, pull through 2 loops, yoh pull through 2 more, yoh pull through last two.

Spike stitch- make a dc into the stitch in the round below, so the stitch below the one you should be working on.

Chain 4 and join with a sl stitch to make a ring

Round 1                       ch 4, *treble into ring, chain 1**  repeat from * to ** 8 times, join  with a slip stitch to third of ch 4 (this makes 9tr and 9 ch 1 spaces)

Round 2                      change colour by joining in any of the ch 1 spaces from round 1, *puff stitch chain 2 ** repeat from * to ** 8 more times, join with sl st to top of first puff stitch

Round 3                      change colour by joining in any of the ch 2 spaces from round 2, dc htr, tr, 2 dtr in same space, dtr in top of puff stitch, in next ch 2 space make 4 dtr, dtr in top of puff stitch, in the next ch 2 space make 3dtr, tr, then tr in top of puff stitch, in the next ch 2 space make 2tr, 2 htr, then htr in top of puff stitch, in the next ch 2             space make htr, tr, dtr, ch 1, dtr, tr, htr, this is the bottom of the heart, htr in top of puff stitch then in the next ch 2 space make 2 htr, 2tr, then tr in top of puff stitch, in the next ch 2 space make tr, 3dtr, then dtr in top of puff stitch, in the next ch 2 space make 4 dtr, dtr in top of puff stitch, in the last ch 2 space make 2dtr, tr, htr, dc, secure with slip stitch to top of puff stitch from round 2.

Round 4                       change colour by joining with sl st in top of same place as the last round was fastened off, dc into same space and every stitch around, at the bottom of the heart dc in ch 1 space then ch 1 then make another dc in same space, continue to dc all around and join with sl st in top of top puff stitch

Round 5                       change colour by joining with sl st where fastened off, dc, dc, spike stitch in next stitch, * dc, dc, spike stitch** repeat from * to ** around heart, when you get to the bottom of the heart make 1 dc in ch 1 space then ch 2 and sl st in first ch to make a picot (this makes a point at the bottom of the heart) dc in same space then repeat from * to **,  sl st in top of puff stitch to fasten off.

Weave in ends and iron.

I think there’s a tiny error in the pattern. When you put in repeats you have “repeat from * 8/9 times” (depending on the round” but it should actually be 7/8 to make the number of stitches you need to end up with since you do from * then repeat it x number of times.

That said, I just finished one and it’s a lovely pattern. Thank you.
